Eh that's what I meant. And yes, you can, Paris Hilton is copywritten. :P
lol the Paris Hilton copyright came to my mind, too (it's on her perfume box). I don't think American citizens truly understand what the Bill of Rights guarantees. The Bill of Rights was designed to protect citizens from the government infringing on what they call "natural rights." Kinda sad that no one really knows that. Ignorance is not bliss.

You guys are missing the point...

The name banning and filtering exist because about 50% of the players are not mature enough to know better. If it wasnt there can you imagine the names we would have??

I have a daughter and several nephews that play the game and am constantly offended by the language and names that I see.

Believe me, I can swear with the best of them. But there is a time and a place for it and this game is a cespool even with the banning and filtering...

Sometimes it seems like the entire game is filled with 10-12 year old boys trying to outdo each other.

Well... maybe not the entire game... but close enough.

I think you sould be able to call your character any name you like. If that name offends people thats their problem, I say NO to cencorship. If you want to be "Hitler Jew Kill". thats your problem and not the problem of GuildWars players. Let the scum of this game call themselves what they want, the rest of us will ignore them.

I would imagine it's the logo that's copyrighted then (The stylised font form of her name on the boxes) not the name itself, just as the Hilton logo is copyrighted for the hotel chains, but that doesn't stop a freind of mine owning Hilton Garage...

@ Molasses: You must be some kind of bhuddist monk, my friend. You've honestly never been offended by anything anyone said, ever?

Unfortunately, I have to agree to a point with Fog of Redoubt, the game is hugely populated with the immature (as are all online games without exception) and the mentality of someone who goes out to offend is also very easily offended - remove the limits and you'd never have anything but racist / sexist / yo-momma-ist arguments raging non stop.

Look at the maturity of these people - the kind of people spamming "OMFG n00b idiot lawl !!!!!!11111eleven" every time people die during 'Mad King Says' or the guy in lions arch a couple days ago spamming "Throw the Jews in the cauldron" for example. There has to be some kind of measure to protect these poor saps from themselves and each other.

On the subject, ever noticed how their favourite insult is always n00b? To which I always respond "And you were born with complete knowledge of the game, were you?"...

The whole point is making a parody on excessive racism, prejudices, and political correctness. Comedy. But I guess not everyone understand that, and would be quite weird if ArenaNet put their foot down for that reason. :S

And everyone is correct about there not being freedom of speech in computer games. Neither do we have these rights on these boards.
It's a semi-common complaint from banned trolls though, perhaps about as common as banned GW players.

People who spout off about their rights always fail to realize that their "rights" stop where the next person's begin. That's why we have laws and rules; to point out the limits.

Let me ask this question...

What is everybody's opinion on... Sofa King or Sopha King?

Is this offensive or trying to bypass the filter? I find the name to be extremely funny...and no I'm not 12, I'm in my uh...*cough* thirties.

While personally I find the name ridiculous rather than offensive, I'd say it was definitely one that would be viewed as trying to bypass the filters.

Also, while I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular, and definitely not at you .. this is just a general statement... Sheer idiocy and immaturity knows NO age boundaries. I work as a Support Tech at a software company and all of the people I talk to are technically adults, but my 10 year-old has more sense than most of the customers I talk to. I won't talk about the belligerant ones, but a few examples of questions we get that ought to be good for a laugh...

"How to I fax a wave file?"
"Can I use your program with my computer turned off?"
"How do I restart my computer?"
"Which one is the CD-ROM drive?"

Add the ones that get pissy and start using language that would make a GW verteran blush and it makes for an interesting day at work.

Ah 8 hours a day, 5 days a week of this.. It's not any wonder I'm still sane... or am I?

The thing of it is that after dealing with that all day, I don't wanna have to come home to hours of seeing n00b and worse in-game along with names like "I Did Your Mom" .. Actually saw that one once... and don't think that my son who is 13 and plays the game should have to see it either. He knows better than to act like that and gets his butt chewed out whenever I even hear him say n00b.

I don't understand this whole racist thing. This is my honest opinion.. People so concerned about racism become racist themselves. I know this is off topic, but.. Black comedians, constantly make jokes about white people. White guy makes a joke about a black guy? DOOM.

Anyway, I agree the name filter is a little bit odd when it comes down to itty bitty things, but is not letting a panda in a game because theyre holy, not? :P

Ooh a panda getting killed. Let's do that.

AS for Offensive stuff...I've never been offended by other peoples beliefs or prejudices...And my Southern USA Heavy Accent attracts alot of "Hick" "Redneck" "Go have sex with your sister" comments. I just laugh because I personally find Stereotypes hilarious, and promote there use for my own enjoyment. I think its only fair that I have to take some hick comments in return for getting great jew, black people, etc jokes, people just need to get over themselves.

Not to say I dont get mad at people, but thats mostly because of something in the game (me raging at them), or the fact I just dont like them.

newb = newbie(somone who is new to the game).
n00b = someone who sucks nomatter how much experiance theyve had.

People are way too sensitive and love to cry racism whenever they can.
* I got fired.
* They pay that higher qualified black guy more than me,racists !.
* Microsoft Words default white background is implying white superiority !

But on Anets word filter it is a good idea because parents dont want there kids to be exposed to the same language online they are exposed to at school

PS you think the character name: Stereotypical black guy
would could be seen as offencive or should i go with the safer
Stereotypical white guy ?

(forewarning, off topic)

Ok this is labeling. Labeling, like profiling and racism, is WRONG. Bad bad! Shame on you! There is never any reason to label someone else. So you think they are stupid, fine. So you don't like them, fine. Unless you have something nice to say, don't say anything! Would make the whole in-game environment so much better.

(back on topic)

I can't believe they would block a word like 'jewel' yet they can have a guild running around with the call letters PUSY? mmmmmk

Labelling is a part of life resistance is futile
E.G. here in England every teenager is labeled, goth chav, skater etc just based on the clothes they wear.
